Robert O. Floyd, Sr.

Robert “Bob” O. Floyd Sr. age 83, of Powell Circle, NE, Lenoir, died Saturday, March 19, 2011 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care. He was born March 28, 1927 in Lake City, South Carolina to the late Eddie G. and Ruth Webster Floyd. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Arnold and David Floyd; and one sister, Mary Ann Rou.

Mr. Floyd came to Lenoir in 1957 as the manager of Collins Department Store. He later owned and operated Tripletts Clothing Company, an upscale mens store in downtown Lenoir. Bob also owned a golf shop, and developed real estate in Woodridge Estates. He was a respected member of the retail community for many years. He was also a United States Navy Veteran serving in World War II.

Bob loved the game of golf, and was an exceptional amateur player for many years. He won numerous golf tournaments, including Lenoir Golf Club Championship seven times, the Cedar Rock County Club Championship and the CRCC Senior Champion, the Caldwell County Amateur Senior Championship, and the Carolinas Golf Association Senior Champion in 1990. Bob was invited to participate in the prestigious Carolinas-Virginia Cup matches as a Senior representing the state of North Carolina. He won many individual and team events in the region, and twice was on a finalist team in the Oldsmobile Scramble National Tournament. He had a remarkable record of seventeen hole-in-ones during his golf career. Bob encouraged young people to learn the game, and always enjoyed competitive golf at every level.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Shirley Jett Floyd of the home; two sons, Robert O. Floyd Jr. and wife Susan and Gregg Floyd, both of Lenoir; one daughter, Mrs. Cheryl Morsch and husband Ric of Summerville, South Carolina.; one brother, Sam M. Floyd of Salisbury; two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Moore of Andrews, South Carolina and Mrs. Lynda Fisher of Jacksonville, Florida; four grandchildren, Tracie Martin and husband Scott, Robert “Bo” O. Floyd, III and wife Brenda, Jason Clement and wife Tiffany and Catherine Clement; nine great-grandchildren, Taylor, Sydney, Parker, Drew, Zac, Noah, Raynn, Ryan and Kelly; and special caretakers, Marco and Cooper.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 3:00 P.M. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Bob Parmley and Pastor Steven O. Walsh. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park with full military honors.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
