Grover Cleveland Townsend, Jr., age 89, of Sunrise Circle, Lenoir, died Friday, October 14, 2011 at V.A. Medical Center in Martinsburg, West Virginia. He was born August 24, 1922 in Robinson County, North Carolina to the late Grover C. Townsend, Sr. and Ida Smith Townsend. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Townsend; and two sisters, Doris Hope and Mary Kelly
Mr. Townsend was a retired Dairy Farmer for Wykes Dairy Farm and was a member of Church of Jesus Christ. He was also a United States Marine Corps Veteran serving in World War II, earning a Silver Star and a Purple Heart.
Survivors include four sons, Kenneth E. Townsend and wife Kelly of Hephzibah, Georgia, Grover L. Townsend and wife Patricia, Douglas W. Townsend and Alvin M. Townsend, all of Lenoir; four daughters, Mrs. Betty Jean Guyton and husband Norman of Dublin, NC, Mrs. Ann Smith and husband Keith of Martinsburg, West Virginia, Mrs. Mary Moore and husband Randy of Statesville and Mrs. Jeana Walker and husband Robert of Asheville; three brothers, Branson Earl Townsend and wife Mildred of Red Springs, NC, Alfred Paul Townsend and wife Dot of Charlotte and Donald Townsend and wife Carol of Woodbridge, Texas; 18 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Church of Jesus Christ in Lenoir conducted by Pastor Cade Burns. Interment will follow at Belleview Cemetery with full military honors.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home.
