Richardson Shrum

Billie was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Newton. She was a graduate of Gardner–Webb Junior College and Appalachian Teachers College (ATC). After a period of teaching, she left NC on her own to travel to Oregon to marry Ray, also a graduate of ATC, who was stationed there while serving in the Air Force.
Billie was an accomplished seamstress, lovingly crafting countless garments and keepsakes for her family and friends. She made everyday clothing for her children, doll clothes, wall hangings, her daughter-in-law's wedding dress and wedding party dresses, gowns for her daughter, holiday costumes; often without patterns. Later in life she created beautiful and meaningful quilts for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. An avid reader, she volunteered with the GED program at CVCC and helped many people learn to read and succeed in life. She will be remembered most for her love of her community and her humor.
