E. Thomas "Tom" Holder, age 70, peacefully stepped into glory on Saturday, April 5th, surrounded by his family. Born October 20, 1954 in the Gamewell Community to Earl Holder (deceased) and Betty Hamby Holder, Tom's life was one of deep connection with both his family and the world around him.

In addition to his father, Tom was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, E. E. Holder and Cora McCall Holder, his maternal grandmother, Jennie Webster Hamby, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Those left to cherish his memory include his mother, Betty Hamby Holder, brother, John Holder (Dolly) of Morganton, sister, Amanda Holder McLean (Jerry) of Lenoir, cousin/like a brother, Jody Shew (Tonya) of Hickory, nieces Lindsey Kilcullen of Charlotte, Corey Harris (Kris) of Charlotte, Alyssa McLean Hartley (Hunter) of Lenoir, nephews Elijah McLean (Cloe) of Lenoir, and Jonah McLean of Lenoir, great nieces, Emory Harris and Tate Harris and great nephews, Karter McLean and Koleson McLean, and numerous cousins.

A proud graduate of Gamewell Collettsville High School, Appalachian State University, and UNC Chapel Hill School of Law (Van Hecke-Wettach Hall), Tom was an avid learner with a deep love for books, nature, and the world around him. He had an extraordinary knowledge of plants and birds, and was able to identify countless species by their common and scientific names. He was especially drawn to the works of writers like Emerson, Thoreau, and Annie Dillard, whose philosophical ideas spoke to his love of nature and introspection.

Tom was also a passionate music lover, with favorites including Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Nanci Griffith, Bonnie Raitt, and the Tedeschi Trucks Band. His love for music and the outdoors was only surpassed by his fierce devotion to his family. He adored spending time with his loved ones, especially the babies, and was a constant presence at family events and gatherings.

Tom was an enthusiastic practitioner of martial arts. At the age of 60, he earned his black belt in Aikido and was an active member of the Christian Aikido Association. He also practiced Tai Chi, a discipline he maintained up until his death. Tom's lifelong pursuit of knowledge, physical discipline, and personal growth were a testament to his strength of character.

Known for his spirited discussions and strong beliefs (especially with politics), Tom was someone who could passionately debate any topic. His opinions were sharp, and his presence was unwavering. He was a man who could always be relied upon—whether for support, guidance, or simply showing up when needed most. His unconditional love for his family and friends was evident in everything he did. He leaves behind a legacy of loyalty, wisdom, and sacrificial love.

A private celebration of life will be held in the days to come.
