Linda Murray
Nelson
Mar 13, 1946 — Feb 5, 2026
Boone
Linda Kay Murray Nelson passed away Thursday, February 5, 2026, after a period of declining health. Born March 13, 1946, in Valdese, Linda was the only child of James Wilson and Mabel Soots Murray and was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, William Wayne Nelson.
Linda is survived by daughter Amanda Mlekush and son William Chase Nelson and those who called her "Grammie" – Jennings Brasier, Bryce Nelson, Sheridan Brasier, Rush Brasier and Emma Nelson. She will also be fondly remembered by her first cousins who were more like sisters and brothers and were an incredible source of support to her.
Throughout her life, Linda was close to family and friends and enjoyed catching up with them in person or by phone. She was known for her thoughtfulness, and frequently sent greeting cards for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and often "just because."
One of Linda's favorite activities was attending live music performances. Her eyes would light up when she talked about upcoming music festivals–whether it was Merlefest in April, a festival on the town square in Lenoir or even the Albino Skunk Bluegrass Festival in Greer. She loved wearing shirts from her favorite bands–from the Shelby Rae Moore Band to the John Cowan Band–and had a collection of prized festival T-shirts that marked her music memories.
Linda enjoyed watching sports as much as she hated cooking–often cheering on the NC State Wolfpack in college basketball. Each year, she looked forward to watching the ACC Tournament, and had even attended the tournament early in her marriage.
A graduate of Hudson High School, Linda worked in the main office of Bernhardt Industries for 43 years until retirement in 2009. After she retired, she spent time pursuing her passion of attending music performances and combing the racks at Belk's to find clothes for her grandchildren.
A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, February 28, 2026 at 1 p.m. at Whitnel First Baptist Church, where Linda was a member.
