Margaret George Prestwood, age 98, of Lenoir passed away Saturday, September 19, 2026 at Brookdale Asheville Walden Ridge Assisted Living in Asheville, NC. She was born September 22, 1927 in Caldwell County to the late Joseph B. George and Lucy Miller George. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years James (Jim) Prestwood. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Homer F. George, Edwina George Shatley, Jacqueline George Canty and Joe M. George. Margaret was a long-time member of the Whitnel United Methodist Church where she kept the nursery for many years. She was well known for her gardening and baking skills. She severed several years as a Cub Scout den mother and Grade mother at Hudson Elementary School. She graduated from Hudson High School with the class of 1945 where she was a member of the Beta Club. Survivors include sons Jim Prestwood (Rebecca) of Durham, NC. Steve Prestwood (Bernita) of Candler, NC. Joe Prestwood (Laurie) of Cannon Falls, MN; three grandchildren, Margaret Chiou (Frank) of Larchmont, NY, Rebecca Prestwood of Shakopee, MN and Shane Prestwood (Danielle) of Candler, NC; and three great-grandchildren, Alexander Chiou and Elizabeth Chiou and Everett James Prestwood. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Margaret’s 98 years were filled with family, faith, service and love. Her memory will live on through the generations of family she leaves behind and in the many lives she touched throughout her long and beautiful life. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2026 at 11:00 am at the Greer-McElveen Funeral Home conducted by Pastor Andrea McCumber. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the funeral home.
