Obituary

Ray Thomas Smith, age 95, of Lenoir, North Carolina went to his Heavenly home on Sunday, September 22, 2024.

Ray was born in Catawba County to the late Vurley T. Smith and Pearl Moretz Smith.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Frances Teachum and grandson, Gregory Thomas.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 68 years, Sylvia Mae Moretz Smith; sons, Jerry Smith (Darlene), Jeff Smith (Ann), and Randy Smith; daughter, Judy Whisnant (David); sister, Evelyn Adams; 5 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren..

Ray was a member of Trinity Methodist Church, where he served the Lord faithfully. He was also a United States Marine. During his time in the Marine Corps, Ray was active duty in the Korean War. After his time serving his country, he became a car salesman at Bush Oldsmobile. Ray will be remembered as a hardworking man, who loved his country, loved his family, loved his wife, and loved his Lord and Savior.

A funeral service to honor the life of Ray Smith will be held on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel at 11am with Reverend Leo Fair officiating.

The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service at the funeral home from 10am to 11am.

Burial will follow the service at Gap Creek Cemetery, located at 1231 US-221, Deep Gap, NC 28618.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Amorem Hospice or Trinity Methodist Church.
