Richard Binghames Hendrix, age 86, of Granite Falls, died Saturday, February 1st after a lengthy illness. He was born October 5, 1938 in Wilkes County to the late James Earlie and Mary Bell Greer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Donna Loy Hendrix, sister Edna Ferguson, brothers Tommy Greer and Garvis Greer, and three half-brothers.

Hendrix, of the Baptist faith, was an army veteran who worked in the yarn mills and later in retail sales. He never had an unkind word to say about anyone and would strike up conversations with strangers like they were old friends. He enjoyed watching old westerns, drinking coffee, telling old stories, reading the Bible, and spending time with his three cats. One thing that always brought a smile to his face was spending time with his great grandson, Ethan McClellan. The two had a special bond that was undeniable.

Survivors include two sons, Rick Hendrix and Shane Jordan, both of Washington, DC; three daughters, Nancy (Mark) McClellan of Claremont, Lisa (Joe) Owens of Granite Falls, and Angela Minton of Granite Falls. He also leaves behind five grandchildren, Matt McClellan, Anthony (Megan) McClellan, Hailey Peden, Zachary (Elena) Hendrix, and Megan Minton; and five great-grandchildren, Corrin Peden, James Ivey, Noah Ivey, Rachel Minton, Ethan McClellan and two great grandsons, Luke McClellan and Heath Hendrix, due this year.
