Rita Hoover Morweiser, 97 of Lenoir, went to be with her Lord and Savior, and beloved husband, Erwin of 67 years, on October 13, 2023.
Rita was born on June 26, 1926 in Hammond, Indiana to the late Joseph Caffree and Olive Rose Hoover. Rita graduated from Bishop Noll Institute and Harnet Business College in Hammond, Indiana. She was later certified to teach Religious Studies at Nazareth College in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She taught in Kalamazoo and Muskegon, Michigan; Dover, Delaware; and Lenoir, North Carolina. She received the Saint Anne's Award from the Catholic Diocese of Michigan for outstanding work with the youth. Rita was a Girl Scout Leader for many years in Michigan and served on the board as well. She was a Weight Watchers lecturer in Hickory for 11 years. Rita served as a volunteer for 27 years at the Lenoir Soup Kitchen in many capacities including President of the Board and President of R.S.V.P. She was honored by James Martin, governor of North Carolina in appreciation for her dedication and service to the people of North Carolina. Rita was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Lenoir for 49 years. She volunteered in many areas of the church. Rita enjoyed knitting, sewing, reading, and square dancing.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Erwin Bernhard Morweiser; a brother, Kenneth and wife Sandy Hoover; and a sister, Constance and husband Edward Rudd.
Those left to cherish her memory are her four daughters, Mrs. Elise Welch and husband James of Mena, Arkansas, Mrs. Karen Schmitt and husband Richard of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Mrs. Lori Poyer of Vermontville, Michigan, and Mrs. Mary Moretz and husband Danny of Hudson, NC; eight grandchildren, Brian and Eric Swarvar, Rebecca Hamblin and Matthew Schmitt, Bethany Burpee and Mike Poyer, Melissa Wilson, and Jason Moretz; fourteen great-grandchildren, Nathan, Evan and Christine Swarvar; Mia and Lilian Schmitt; Grace Hamblin; Cavan, Chase and Chloe Burpee; Michael Moretz, and Connor, Carson, Chandler, and Cayden Wilson whom she all loved dearly.
A Funeral Service will be held Thursday, October 26th, 2023 at 12:00 PM at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Lenoir with Father Lawrence M. LoMonaco and Deacon Dr. Ron Caplette officiating.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 25th, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home.
Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Lenoir.
