Samuel Lewis Erby, Jr., age 80, of Granite Falls passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2026 at his residence. He was born April 20, 1946 in Richmond County, NC to the late Samuel L. Erby, Sr. and Mildred Skipper Erby. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by one brother, Robert Erby; and one sister, Nell Greene.

Raised in East Rockingham with a humble upbringing, Sam was a go-getter from the start.  While delivering newspapers and cutting grass, he dreamed big. Hoping to see the world and get money for college, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps. Instead, he spent the prime of his youth serving 2 tours in Vietnam. Upon returning home, he became a NC State Trooper and attended night classes to earn his college degree. He was stationed to Caldwell County and that brought him to Granite Falls. It was there that he met and married the love of his life and had one son.

Sam quickly became involved in the community by serving on the town council and joining civic groups like the Lions Club. With the help of his friend, Brad Wilson, he revived the Granite Falls Press newspaper. After leaving the highway patrol, he continued to serve the State of North Carolina for the next 30+ years in various departments, culminating in an appointment to the Dept. of Transportation. Overseeing impactful projects such as the widening of Hwy 321 to Blowing Rock, he left a lasting legacy of public service. After retiring from the state, he used all of this experience and knowledge to start a successful business in government relations, Erby & Associates. As dad, liked to say, "not too bad for an ole boy from the mill hill!"

Sam was married to his soulmate, Kate, for 52 wonderful years. Together they built a life filled with laughter, loyalty, love and family traditions. He was the proud father to his son, J. Skip, and an adoring grandfather to his cherished "my baby," Sloane, who held a special place in his heart.

Anyone who knew Sam knew his quick wit, funny sayings, and unforgettable sense of humor. He was always cracking jokes, telling stories, and making others laugh – often when they needed it most. His humor was legendary, and his presence made ordinary moments memorable.

Outside of work and family, Sam found peace in the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved spending time in the woods and on the water. As a tree forester, he had a deep respect for nature and took pride in caring for the land he loved so much.

Sam will be remembered for his strength, his laughter, his wisdom and the countless lives he touched throughout his many years here on Earth. Though he will be deeply missed, the stories, memories and love he leaves behind will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving and devoted wife of 52 years, Kate Farmer Erby; one son, Skip Erby and wife Brittany; one sister, Brenda Raseberry and husband Jimmy; one grandchild, Sloane Erby; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services to honor the life of Mr. Erby will be held Sunday, May 10, 2026 at 3:00 P.M. at First United Methodist Church of Granite Falls with Rev. Mike Harris and Rev. Howard Fleming officiating.

Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Marines and Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard.
