Obituary

Shirley McGuire Pruett, age 86, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.

Shirley was born on March 7, 1940 in Wilkes County, North Carolina to the late Harrison and Vena Hall.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Billy Lester Pruett; son, Warren “Kenny” K. McGuire Jr.; and sister, Margaret Elledge.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Loretta Hamby (Roger) and Cindy Pennington (Rick); grandchildren, Amanda Hamby (Daryl), Chad Hamby (Elizabeth Gray), Zack Pennington (Shelby), and Katie Pennington Waldroup (Neil); great-grandchildren, Cooper Pennington, Kennedy Pennington, and Adriana Waldroup; long-time friend, Warren Kent McGuire Sr.; fur baby, Bella; and feathered friend, Willie.

Shirley was a social butterfly. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and Happy Cheers Quilting. She never met a stranger. Shirley saw the good in everyone. She was the best mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Shirley was the glue that held her family together. The family takes great comfort in knowing that Shirley is now resting at peace and with her Savior and in the fact that one day, they will see her again.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to Happy Cheers Quilting c/o Carol Henkle at 383 Main St. Hudson, NC 28638.

A funeral service to honor the life of Shirley Pruett will be held on Tuesday, October 6, 2026 at 2:00PM at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel.

The family will receive visitors at the funeral home one hour prior to the service from 1:00PM until 2:00PM.

Burial will immediately follow the service at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Lenoir.
